Television via the FritzBox: Hardly anyone knows about this ingenious function

The most important information in advance, not every FritzBox can simply stream TV programs, that would be too nice. But if you use a FritzBox Cable, in many cases you can have the incoming TV signal distributed in your apartment or house via WLAN and use it with the FritzApp TV on your cell phone or tablet.
There is the FritzApp TV for Android and iOS, although the versions differ somewhat. AVM now has version 2.0.5 ready. This version arrived in the PlayStore a bit earlier for Android phones and tablets, but it is now also available for iPhones and iPads.

Activate TV streaming on the FritzBox

Only the Fritzbox Cable can distribute the TV signal in the WLAN.

CHIP

On the FritzBox interface – but beware, this only works with a FritzBox Cable – navigate to the "DVB-C" area and switch on Live TV. Then click on "Start channel search" under "Channel search", which takes about 5 to 15 minutes. The FritzBox displays a channel list with TV and radio programs as a result.
Important: Is the item DVB-C missing on your cable Fritzbox? This may be due to the provider, so DVB-C streaming is missing on some FritzBox models from Vodafone, such as the FritzBox 6591 with FritzOS 7.13. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do here is wait and hope that Vodafone will release the feature again with the next update. In fact, there was recently a bunch of updates from Vodafone for the Fritzbox 6591 Cable and the Fritzbox 6490 Cable.

AVM states the following as system requirements:

DVB-C TV connection Smartphone or tablet with Android version 7.0 or iOS 12.0 or higher

FRITZ!Box 6490 Cable with at least FRITZOS 6.20

FRITZ!Box 6590 Cable with at least FRITZOS 6.83

FRITZ!Box 6591 Cable with at least FRITZOS 7.20

FRITZ!Box 6660 Cable with at least FRITZOS 7.20

Use FritzApp TV

The FritzApp TV is the most fun with the HD channels on the tablet.

You only have to install and start the FritzApp TV. If you are in the same WLAN as the FritzBox Cable with the TV streaming option activated, then you don't have to set up anything big. You will automatically be taken to the overview page with the chic station logos. By the way, streaming only works with unencrypted TV channels.
Simply select a channel and you can start watching TV. On the right edge you can quickly switch to other channels or use the menu above to return to the overview. Of course, full-screen playback is also possible, and you can display information about the current program at the bottom edge.
The favorites list, on which you can save your favorite stations and sort them according to your taste, is also practical. In addition to the channel logos, you can also display an EPG in the overview for which AVM has improved the stability with the last update.

For Windows and Mac: Play TV stream with VLC

The TV images are also available on Windows and macOS via VLC media player.

With a little preparation, you can also view the TV stream on Windows or macOS. We recommend the VLC media player for this. To do this, open the Fritzbox interface on the PC and navigate to the "DVB-C" area and then to "Channel list". Scroll down to the bottom of the "SD" and "HD" tabs and click on "Create channel list".
You open these channel lists in VLC and can then watch live TV there. Use the forward and back buttons to zap between the programs; you can find an overview under "Playback". Some information about the program is displayed under "Tools" under "Television program (EPG)". If available, you can also display subtitles or change the gate track.

Live TV with Kodi

The live TV function of the FritzBox can also be used in Kodi.

Even those who use the Kodi media center can integrate the live TV function from the FritzBox there. As with VLC above, you need to create the channel lists to do this. In Kodi, install the add-on PVR IPTV Simple Client. Once installed, click "Configure" and in the "General" tab change the "Location" to "Local path". Below that, select the path to the station list under "M3U playlist path".
Kodi should now show the channel list in the "TV" section and you can watch Live TV via Kodi. Unfortunately, Kodi cannot immediately use the FritzBox's EPG data. Kodi wants them in XMLTV format. AVM provides detailed instructions for setting up Kodi, which also includes tips for the EPG.
